22: The Rise of the Robots

Spies, Lies & Cybercrime by Eric O'Neill

Stay tuned for next week’s very special issue of Spies, Lies & Cybercrime where I will be delving into the Robert Hanssen case, how we caught the biggest spy in US history and my personal feelings on not being able to challenge my old mentor and adversary one last time before he died in prison. Tuesday, February 18 is the 24th anniversary of Hanssen’s arrest. Make certain you are subscribed so you don’t miss it! Please share the newsletter with friends, family, colleagues, and your mentors (and adversaries). Until then, enjoy this week’s deep dive into the Rise of the Robot!

Welcome to the Future—Where Robots Run the Show

It’s a crisp morning in the not-so-distant future. A sleek electric car hums into a service station, and instead of a grease-stained mechanic, a humanoid robot strolls over. Its faceplate, a glowing digital screen, flickers to life and text scrolls as it speaks. “How may I assist you today?” it asks in a soothing, almost unsettlingly perfect voice.

You rub sleep from your eyes and complain about a strange noise coming from the engine. In microseconds, the robot taps into a quantum computer in the cloud, pulling the car’s full diagnostic history, manufacturer specs, and—because it can—searching forums where humans have debated this exact issue.

As it gets to work, another bot—this one rolling around like a cross between R2-D2 and an overeager barista—chirps up, “Coffee? Tea? Maybe a protein shake for optimal performance?” You roll your eyes--the service station owner clearly has a Star Wars nostalgia--and decline. Gas station coffee of the future remains gas station coffee. While the service robot drives his car into a repair bay, you settle into the service station's small lounge and key your laptop to life. The machine connects to Starlink. Some years ago, the universal wireless system went public and free, allowing global wireless connection. Your paid plan is blazing fast and works everywhere.

Minutes later, the humanoid returns with an answer: “You’ve got a faulty controller module.” It processes payment using facial recognition—no wallet needed, just identity. within thirty minutes, the car is fixed, you go on your way, and somewhere, a mechanic with decades of experience wonders how long before his job becomes as nostalgic as R2D2.

The Robots Are Here—And They’re Not Just for Sci-Fi Fans Anymore

Back in my New Year’s predictions, I called it: 2025 would be the year robots go mainstream. And so far, the world is proving me right—spectacularly. Robotics has exploded from futuristic prototypes into tangible, industry-altering forces, reshaping everything from warehouses to living rooms. If you thought last year’s AI boom was big, buckle up. Robotics is about to take an immense leap forward.

But here is the big question: How Close Are We to a Robot That Does My Dishes?

In my house I was somehow anointed the dishwasher. I have to admit, I've gotten quite good at it. My spacial ability to geometrically place plates, cups, bowls, silverware and that one obnoxious pot is unparalleled. As my wife likes to say, I am an expert at putting the kitchen to rest each night. But the task does take a good chunk of time that I'd rather spend relaxing after a long day writing these newsletters!

Proof from my children that yes, Dad Does All Dishes.

So when will we have a personal robot that loads the dishwasher, takes out the trash, and maybe even cooks dinner? The answer: sooner than you think.

Companies like Tesla’s Optimus, Agility Robotics’ Digit, and Apptronik’s Apollo are actively working on general-purpose humanoid robots designed for home use. While these bots aren’t cheap yet, costs are dropping, and AI is improving their ability to adapt to real-world environments. We may not see fully functional household helpers in every home by the end of the year, but in five years? Ten? The trajectory is clear—we’re heading toward a world where robots will handle the mundane, giving us back time we never knew we were losing.

The biggest hurdle? Dexterity and real-time problem-solving. Washing dishes isn’t just about scrubbing; it’s about adjusting grip, dealing with fragile glass, and understanding spatial constraints. The good news? AI is pushing these capabilities forward at a breakneck pace.

AI: The Rocket Fuel Driving Robotics Into the Future

The biggest force behind this robotic revolution? AI. Specifically, multimodal AI models and real-time learning systems are making robots significantly smarter, faster, and more adaptive.

AI-powered robots can now see and interpret their environments like never before. OpenAI’s GPT-4V and Google DeepMind’s Gemini are paving the way for multimodal robots that understand both visual and textual data, making them much more effective at real-world tasks. Beyond vision, new machine learning models enable robots to learn from mistakes on the fly. Instead of requiring thousands of programmed rules, they can observe, adjust, and improve their performance dynamically.

Affordability is another key factor. AI advancements are making robot hardware cheaper. The more robots can rely on AI for decision-making, the less they need expensive, custom-built components. This shift means consumer-grade personal robots are arriving sooner than we think, bringing advanced automation into homes at a price point within reach of everyday consumers.

2025 is Just the Beginning

This year is shaping up to be a defining moment for robotics, and we’re only getting started. With AI providing the intelligence and hardware advancements making robots more practical, we’re on the cusp of a world where automation isn’t just for factories and warehouses—it’s coming to our homes. And when your personal robot finally does wash your dishes or take out the trash, you’ll know exactly who called it first.

Until next time—keep an eye on the robots. They’re watching us, too.

Now on to the news!

DeepSeek or Deep State? The AI Chatbot with a Direct Line to China

Well, well, well… who could have guessed that a Chinese AI chatbot might have secret ties to the Chinese government? (Oh right, everyone paying attention.) Security researchers just blew the lid off DeepSeek, revealing that its login data conveniently pings China Mobile—aka a state-run telecom giant. Translation? Your chats might not just be between you and the bot. As we speed into the age of AI, it’s a good reminder: if you don’t know where your data is going, assume it’s going somewhere you wouldn’t like.

Stargate's Grand Tour: OpenAI's Nationwide Hunt for AI Superhubs

In a move that screams "go big or go home," OpenAI is scouting 16 U.S. states to erect colossal data centers for its ambitious Stargate project. With Texas already breaking ground, states like Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin are vying for a piece of the AI pie. As we witness the rise of the robots, it's clear: the future is being built, one data center at a time.

Super Bowl's New MVP: AI Tackles Security with Facial Recognition

In a move that would make any sci-fi fan proud, this year's Super Bowl is upping its security game by deploying AI-driven facial recognition technology. While drones are benched, advanced computer vision systems are stepping in to monitor the massive crowds, ensuring both safety and efficiency. As the robots rise, even our most cherished traditions are getting a high-tech upgrade.

Amazon's Robotic Revolution: Saving Billions with a Mechanical Workforce

In a move that could make even the most seasoned warehouse worker break a sweat, Amazon's ever-expanding fleet of over 750,000 robots is projected to save the company a staggering $10 billion annually by 2030. These mechanical marvels handle everything from storage and inventory management to picking, packing, and transporting packages. With the opening of their first "next-generation" fulfillment center in Shreveport, Louisiana, Amazon is setting the stage for a future where robots are not just assistants but essential employees. As the rise of the robots continues, it's clear that the future of fulfillment is automated.

Current Speaking Tour

I’m on the road again speaking across the country! This week I will be in San Diego, Orlando, Chicago, Boston and then back to good old Washington DC. I’ll be speaking for Corelight, 5th3rd Bank and Fortinet. Continue to follow my speaking journey on Instagram.

I asked my AI to create an image showing my speaking tour travels and this is the best it could come up with after countless prompts and attempts. I tried the same detailed promo against a half dozen other top-tier image generating AI’s and it failed every time. Graphic designers, there is still a place for your work!
